Sakonnet Light, a sparkplug lighthouse off Sakonnet Point in Little Compton, Rhode Island, was built in 1884 as an offshore beacon marking the waters near the point. Deactivated in 1954 after Hurricane Carol and once slated for demolition, it survived through local opposition and the 1961 purchase by Carl and Carolyn Haffenreffer. Preservation efforts later gained formal recognition when it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 and acquired by the Friends of Sakonnet Lighthouse in 1985. The United States Coast Guard reactivated the light in 1997, and a major restoration was completed in 2012, capping a long community effort to save and restore it.
