Atticus Finch: Lawyer - Hero
Arts & Culture
5
Atticus Finch stands as a lawyer-hero in Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird, a figure of truth, moral purpose, and conscience who understands the price his community will pay for truth yet loves that community and is willing to stand alone for what is right. He embodies knowledge and experience strengthened by the untainted insight of a child, and his example challenges the legal profession to reject hatred, bigotry, cynicism, greed, and intolerance and to make the child the father of the man in confronting the moral conflicts and struggles of human existence. In the symbolic judgment placed before the legal profession, his concluding appeal remains: "In the name of God, do your duty."
