Horse Heaven is a protected wildland in western Virginia within the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests, centered on Horse Heaven Ridge and managed largely as backcountry for non-motorized use. Recognized by The Wilderness Society as a Mountain Treasure and protected under later roadless rules, it remains a relatively undeveloped forest valued for solitude, habitat, and low-impact recreation. Its steep Southern Blue Ridge terrain supports diverse woods, trout water, and wildlife, with old growth and many trees more than 100 years old. Trails, creeks, old logging roads, railroad grades, and traces of manganese mining reflect both recreation and the area's earlier industrial use.
