Hot Well Dunes is a remote hot spring area in Arizona’s San Simon Valley on Bureau of Land Management land southeast of Safford. Discovered in the late 1920s during oil exploration drilling, it still shows that origin through artesian wells and rusted drilling remains nearby. Geothermally heated mineral water rises at about 106 °F and roughly 250 gallons per minute, feeding two main soaking pools, a larger cooler rock-lined pool, and more primitive pools edged by cattails that support wildlife and fish. The surrounding 2,000 acres also serve as a camping area, prized for wide desert views, solitude, and a basic pack-it-out setting.
