Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge in northern Maine protects 5,252 acres around Limestone, Caswell, Connor, and Caribou, along with about 2,400 acres of wetland conservation easements elsewhere in Aroostook County. Established in 1998 on part of the former Loring Air Force Base, it preserves forests, wetlands, meadows, and grasslands in a region heavily shaped by farming. Remnants of the decommissioned Cold War base, including concrete bunkers once associated with early nuclear weapons storage, have become part of the habitat. This varied landscape supports migratory songbirds, grassland birds, waterfowl, mammals such as moose and Canada lynx, and diverse amphibians and reptiles.
