Big Caliente Hot Springs is a remote group of thermal mineral springs in California’s Los Padres National Forest, known for primitive soaking pools and a challenging approach. At the main spring, water emerges from a bluff at about 115 °F and feeds a large rock-and-concrete pool whose temperature can be adjusted with diversion valves. Additional primitive pools lie beside and across the creek, including one supplied by a separate hot spring of similar temperature. The water is noted for its soda content. Access usually requires a 13.3-mile hike, though a rough road by way of Romero Canyon is sometimes passable. Nearby Little Caliente Hot Springs has several rock-lined pools fed by 105 °F water.
