Shortly after arriving in 1886, Lee Ives and his wife Rena built two log cabins near the river bank and began taking in travelers near what later became Pateros. Lee Ives built Ive's Landing Hotel there in 1894-95, with a main floor dining room overlooking the Columbia River, and in its early days it also had a barbershop open on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Ives bought and sold horses and traded in furs, later recalling that trapping was extensive and that in his second year there he bought $24,000 worth of furs, chiefly marten, beaver, otter, bear, and deer, hauled them to Spokane in a wagon bed, shipped them to St. Louis, and made two trips to market each year. The hotel operated until 1965, when it was destroyed during the construction of Wells Dam.
