El Caso Lookout Complex
Science & Tech
The El Caso Lookout Complex is a historic fire lookout in the Gila National Forest north of Apache Creek, New Mexico, built in 1934 by the Works Progress Administration during the New Deal expansion of forest fire detection infrastructure. It was one of three lookout complexes constructed in Catron County in that period, together with the Mangas Mountain and Bearwallow Mountain complexes. The site endures as evidence of federal work programs in the 1930s and of the effort to watch for wildfire across this remote mountain region.
