Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church gave its name to the civil parish. It was the first church on the second German Coast when Louisiana was a colony of Spain, and it served the west and east banks of the river until 1864. Its old cemetery contains the wife of Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard and the John Slidell family tomb.
