1811 Kid Ory Historic House
History
This historic house in LaPlace, Louisiana, has been interpreted through two closely connected stories rooted at the same property: the 1811 German Coast uprising launched here by Charles Deslondes and the 1886 birth of jazz pioneer Kid Ory. Once part of Andry Plantation and later Woodland Plantation, the site also explored plantation life and early sound technology, linking local plantation history to the rise of jazz. Its significance has rested on centering Black history within a plantation landscape by connecting enslavement and revolt with cultural creation. After closures tied to the COVID-19 pandemic, Hurricane Ida costs, and financial strain, the property was sold in 2024 to Joy and Jo Banner for continued preservation and reinterpretation.
