Condor Peak is a 5,442-foot summit in the San Gabriel Mountains about 20 miles north of downtown Los Angeles, now within the expanded boundary of the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument as of May 2, 2024. Its name honors the California condor, once common here in the early 1900s, and has been officially adopted by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names. The mountain rises steeply, gaining more than 2,200 feet above Ybarra Canyon in about a mile. Its chaparral slopes drain toward Big Tujunga Creek, and its dry summers, occasional thunderstorms, and cold, wet winters reflect Pacific weather lifted over the range.
