Jackie Robinson (1919-1972) began his professional baseball career while a lieutenant at Camp Breckinridge in 1944. The next year, Branch Rickey, Brooklyn Dodgers general manager, signed the four-sport letterman from UCLA for the Montreal Royals, the top Dodger farm club. In 1947, Robinson was promoted to the Dodgers team, breaking the major league color barrier. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962.
