Hovey Lake Fish and Wildlife Area near Mount Vernon in southwestern Indiana is a protected public landscape of nearly 7,000 acres devoted to fish and wildlife conservation and outdoor recreation, managed by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. Its history long predates its current role as a reserve. The land was ceded to the Indiana Territory in the Treaty of Vincennes in 1804, later granted to the Wabash and Erie Canal Company, and eventually acquired by Charles Hovey after the canal project failed. His ownership gave the area the name it still bears.
