Quail Creek State Park in Washington County, Utah, centers on a six hundred-acre reservoir near Hurricane that serves both recreation and regional water storage. Completed in 1985 to provide irrigation and culinary water to the St. George area, the reservoir is fed mainly by water diverted from the Virgin River through buried pipeline rather than from Quail Creek itself. Formed by a main earthfill dam and a south roller-compacted concrete dam that replaced a failed earthfill structure after the 1989 New Year’s Day collapse, the lake also supports varied fish habitats. Its name preserves both the area’s former quail population and a disputed local creek identity tied to historic water rights.
