The Brownington Congregational Church was completed in 1841 after the congregation had met for eighteen years on the second floor of the Orleans County Grammar School. In 1899, Brownington native William Barstow Strong, a former student at the Orleans County Grammar School and president of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad, paid for extensive remodeling of the church's interior and also installed a large bell and spire for the belfry. At the front of the graveyard next to the church, near the road and looking out toward the Old Stone House, are the graves of Alexander Lucius and Mercy Ladd Merrill Twilight. Other familiar names in the graveyard include Elijah and Sylvia Strong, grandparents of William Barstow Strong.
