Annie Reed lived with limited options in a segregated society, working as a dressmaker, laundress, and caretaker for the Hurst family's children, and she survived Kentucky's 1917 train accident physically unharmed while carrying emotional scars; through her descendants, her family continues to make an impact in Kentucky. Reverend C.H. Parrish established Eckstein Norton University in 1899, and the institution flourished by offering extensive carpentry, bookkeeping, and theology courses, attracting 1,794 students from 14 states by 1911 before merging with Lincoln Institute in 1912. Near Shepherdsville, Bowman Valley School was founded in 1916 to provide education for Black students, and Mattie Owens taught grades 1-8 in a single room as the school flourished until desegregation in 1957 and today stands at Bullitt County Board of Education as a cherished symbol of preservation.
