On July 2, 1863, CSA Gen. J.H. Morgan began a raid intended to prevent a USA move to Tenn. and Va. He was repulsed at Green River on July 4, defeated a USA force at Lebanon on July 5, moved through Bardstown on July 6, and after a night march crossed here on July 7. After resting his troops a few hours, he proceeded to Brandenburg, crossed to Indiana on July 8, and continued the raid until he was captured in northeast Ohio on July 26.
