This tank held water for the City of Brewton Electric Light and Water Works Fire Protection System and was built circa the early 1890's. The site was originally the Blacksher Miller Lumber Company, became Foshee & McGowin Lumber in 1899, and was bought by the Lovelace Brothers in 1900. Other tanks and wells on the site also supported fire control. Fire was a major problem for lumber mills, and many in the area lost their facilities in fires over the years. At least three wells were dug to keep water flowing into this tank. One well, just down the embankment from the back wall of the tank structure, still flows from a vertical cast iron pipe. A hose reel house would have stood nearby, and the old brick foundation across the walk path may relate to the small hose reel house, possibly with a pump, shown on the 1898 Sanborn Map. That map also places the tank here with three springs feeding it.
