Pharaoh Mountain is the highest peak in New York’s Pharaoh Lake Wilderness Area, rising on the northwest shore of Pharaoh Lake south of Paradox in the Adirondacks. It also played a notable role in Adirondack forest fire detection. A fire observation station was established on its summit in April 1910, initially using the open summit itself for clear views and a simple wooden frame with a canvas tarp for shelter. In 1918, a 35-foot Aermotor LS40 fire tower was added. Fire watching continued on the mountain until 1987, and the tower was removed in 1992 after vandalism caused irreparable damage and it was deemed non-conforming within the wilderness area.
