Pharaoh Lake Wilderness Area is a protected section of New York’s Forest Preserve in the Adirondack Park, straddling the Essex–Warren county line near Ticonderoga, Hague, Horicon, and Schroon. Its character comes from broad waters and rugged terrain, with 39 lakes and ponds covering about 1,100 acres and Pharaoh Lake among the largest lakes entirely within the Forest Preserve. Past fires and dry soils shaped forests of conifers, white birch, shoreline white pine, and surviving hardwood stands in sheltered unburned areas. Widely known for hiking and backpacking, it offers roughly 62.8 miles of foot trails, 14 lean-tos, and interior campsites while retaining a remote feel.
