Charles Stone and Andy Kelsey built the first adobe home in Lake County on land purchased from Salvador Vallejo. The house was constructed by forced Indian labor, causing much resentment and culminating in the murder of both Stone and Kelsey by Indians in the fall of 1849. Their remains are beneath this monument.
