Greenhorn Mountain, the highest summit in Colorado’s Wet Mountains, rises 12,352 feet in the Greenhorn Mountain Wilderness of San Isabel National Forest and is the highest point in Pueblo County. Towering more than 6,000 feet above the eastern plains, it is a prominent landmark across south-central Colorado, with alpine terrain above timberline and protected habitats in a relatively secluded wilderness. Its name comes from the Spanish Cuerno Verde, used for two Jupe Comanche war chiefs. Near the mountain on September 3, 1779, the younger Cuerno Verde was killed in battle with an expedition led by Juan Bautista de Anza and supported by Spanish troops and Native American allies. In 1906, the United States Board on Geographic Names officially adopted the English form Greenhorn.
