Huerfano Butte, a volcanic plug in southern Colorado north of Walsenburg, rises about 200 feet above the surrounding floodplain on the south side of the Huerfano River, giving it a stark, isolated profile. Early Spanish explorers called it Huérfano, meaning “orphan,” for its solitary appearance. Its prominence made it an important landmark on the route later known as the Trapper’s Trail to Taos, New Mexico, and it was noted by John Williams Gunnison and John C. Frémont during railroad survey expeditions. The butte also gave its name to Huerfano County and the Huerfano River, reflecting its lasting influence on local geography and identity.
