From 1912 to 1973, the Waterloo, Cedar Falls, & Northern Railway operated the Cedar Valley Road as an electric rail line providing passenger and freight service between Cedar Rapids, Cedar Falls, and Waverly, and Brandon provided a depot. Today, the Cedar Valley Nature Trail serves as a recreational transportation pathway through Iowa's Cedar Valley Corridor and passes through 10 communities, including Brandon, a small community along the trail that annually sponsors a Fools Ride in April and a Sloof Ride in September, is home to Iowa's Largest Frying Pan, and lies near Lime Creek Campground and Koutny Pond's 12-acre fishing lake. Between Brandon and La Porte City, the trail crosses Mud Creek, Spring Creek, and the Cedar River and runs along wetlands in the Twin Springs Natural Area and Spring Creek Flats, where wet corridors and associated woodlands make this the most wooded section of the Cedar Valley Nature Trail.
