Near Quasqueton, Cedar Rock State Park preserves the Lowell Walter Residence, Cedar Rock, a Frank Lloyd Wright house set beside the Wapsipinicon River. Built in 1950 in Wright’s Usonian style, the single-story home reflects his ideal of plain living in close relationship with nature, with living areas arranged in a “tadpole” plan that separates functions while tying the house to its landscape. Cedar Rock is regarded as one of Wright’s most complete designs because he shaped not only the structure but also the furniture, draperies, and accessories. After Lowell Walter’s death in 1981, the property was given to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and opened to the public.
