Built in 2004 by several local men to promote Brandon's Cowboy Breakfast, Iowa's Largest Fryin' Pan was modeled to scale after a 10 inch cast iron frying pan and took 41 hours of volunteer labor to construct. It has an 8 foot base, measures 9 feet 3 inches at the rim, has a 5 foot handle for a total length of 14 feet 3 inches, and weighs 1,020 pounds. A 10 inch frying pan holds 6 eggs, while this one would hold 528 eggs, or 44 dozen; a 10 inch frying pan holds 4 pork chops, while this one holds 352 one-half pound pork chops, or 176 pounds of pork chops; and a 10 inch frying pan holds 1 pound of bacon, while this one holds 88 pounds of bacon. Brandon's now annual Cowboy Breakfast is held on the third Sunday in September from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The first breakfast was held in 2000 and was held twice a year until 2010. An average of one thousand people are served each year, with scrambled eggs, ham, sausage, pancakes, fried potatoes, sausage gravy, and baking powder biscuits all cooked outside over open fires in cast iron frying pans and Dutch ovens. Since 2000, nearly 22,000 people have been served, and profits from the Cowboy Breakfasts are used for the construction and maintenance of the Brandon Area Community Center, where the pan is located.
