In downtown Bridgeport, Connecticut, this history museum connects P. T. Barnum’s life and career to the city’s broader industrial and civic development. Housed in the stone and terra-cotta building Barnum funded for the Bridgeport Scientific Society and the Fairfield County Historical Society, it opened in 1893 as the Barnum Institute of Science and History. Financial troubles eventually ended the resident societies, and the city took ownership in 1933, opening the museum in 1936. After periods as a remodeled museum and city hall annex, it reopened in 1968 with renewed focus on Barnum and Bridgeport. Later renovations, landmark recognition, and digitized collections reinforced its role as a major center for Barnum-related history.
