Tongue Point Light, also called Bridgeport Breakwater Light or Bug Light, stands at the west side of the entrance to Bridgeport Harbor and remains an active navigational aid. Built in 1891 as Bridgeport expanded its waterfront for growing water-borne freight, it helped support the development of the inner harbor as a transshipment point tied to Connecticut’s rail and water freight systems. Originally placed at the end of a breakwater offshore, it was moved to its present site after the shipping channel was widened again in 1919. Automated in 1954, it survived planned removal in 1967 after local boaters objected, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.
