In September 1857, the Mountain Meadows Massacre killed members of an emigrant caravan from Arkansas and elsewhere, including families and individuals from Tennessee, Indiana, and numerous Arkansas counties such as Boone, Carroll, Johnson, Benton, Marion, and areas near Lead Hill, Harrison, Paris, and Bruno. Modern historical research updated the list of victims beyond what was known when the 1955 monument was designed, identifying the dead from the Aden, Baker, Beller, Beach, Cameron, DeShazo, Dunlap, Eaton, Edwards, Fancher, Huff, Jones, McEntire, Miller, Mitchell, Prewit, Rush, Tackitt, Wilson, and Wood families, as well as others known only to God. Those killed included caravan leaders, farmers, merchants, drovers, a physician’s son, a veteran of the Black Hawk War, former justices of the peace, a former Arkansas State Representative’s widow and children, husbands, wives, brothers, sisters, cousins, twins, infants, and many other children. The updated research also records children who survived the massacre from the Baker, Dunlap, Fancher, Huff, Jones, Miller, and Tackitt families.
