Enid’s city-owned Midgley Museum preserves an unusual stone house built from the Midgley family’s own rock and mineral collection and operated by the Northwest Oklahoma Masonic Lodges. The family, English immigrants who arrived in the United States in the 1870s, farmed wheat and hay and gathered unusual stones during their travels to market crops. Those finds grew into a large collection, and they had Texas stonemasons build a home from excavated rocks before donating both house and collection to Enid. Notable features include a 7,000-pound petrified tree stump, a fireplace of fossil stone with a large gypsum selenite, fluorescent rock displays, and varied mineral specimens.
