General John Armstrong was a Scottish Covenanter and a soldier of the American Revolution. He served as Lieutenant Colonel of the 2d. Battalion Provincial troops in 1756, Brigadier General in the Continental Army in 1776, and Major General of the Pennsylvania Militia from 1778 to the close of the war. He commanded the Pennsylvania Militia at Brandywine and Germantown and died in 1795.
