On June 1, 1813, a ship-to-ship battle between USS Chesapeake and HMS Shannon was visible from this point at sea, and during the fight Captain James Lawrence spoke his famous last words, “Don’t Give Up The Ship,” which became the battle cry of the U.S. Navy.
