Methodist pioneer Freeborn Garrettson visited this area in the spring of 1779 to bring his faith to local people, and his efforts were favorably received, leading to the organization of several local Methodist societies, including the Cedar Neck Society, from which this church traces its origin. Although local class meetings were often held outdoors or in private residences, members for many years had to travel some distance to worship in a church. On October 1, 1858, the society purchased a small lot at this location for the construction of a church, and the building was completed and dedicated the following year. The church became known as Mariner’s Bethel in recognition of the occupation of many of its members. On June 16, 1894, four acres of adjoining land were purchased to build a new church and expand the cemetery. The new building was completed in 1889. A community hall was added to the sanctuary in 1926, then replaced by a new education building completed in 1959, when the sanctuary’s interior and exterior were also completely renovated. The education building was later renovated during construction of a new addition completed in 1995.
