Captain Abraham Lincoln, Sr.
History
1
Captain Abraham Lincoln, Sr., grandfather of the 16th president, was killed near his home by Lincoln's Run in Washington County in April 1788 by a Native American. He was buried in The Pioneer Cemetery on the precipice overlooking the Fulling Dam on the Beechfork River. A gravestone marked “A. Lincoln” identified his burial site for many years until the gravestone was destroyed. The Pioneer Cemetery also contains the grave of President Lincoln's great-aunt, Naomi Shipley Mitchell, who was slain by Native Americans near Crab Orchard, Kentucky, in 1790 while traveling with her family from Virginia to Beechland.
