From 1861 to 1865, Giles County honored Confederate soldiers as its heroes. The county furnished seven volunteer companies numbering about 800 men, including Company D of the 7th Regiment Infantry, Company F of the 24th, Companies H and I of the 36th, Company H of the 37th Cavalry, McComas-French Artillery, Starke's Battalion, Wise Brigade, Giles County Reserves, and the 4th Battalion Brigade. It declared a duty to the dead who died for them and whose memories dare never die, and a duty to posterity to see that children know their virtues and rise worthy of their sires, in words attributed to Jefferson Davis.
