On this corner stood the home and general store of Samuel Downer Jr. He was one of Westfield's first merchants and postmasters, and a Revolutionary War veteran. In 1980, the citizens of Westfield conducted an archeological dig, recovering many artifacts of his life and times. Elizabeth Pate, like Samuel Downer, contributed much to the community.
