Founded as the weekly Upshur County Democrat on January 1, 1877, this newspaper became the oldest continuous business in the county. Early owners included W. C. Paul, the Rev. S. R. Chadick, and J. P. Hart, who renamed it the Texas Mirror in 1882 and the Gilmer Mirror in 1895. Since 1915 it has been owned by the family of George Tucker (1861-1934), a veteran journalist of New York and other cities. From 1916 to 1944 it also had a daily edition, considered a record for a town of this size. Russell H. Laschinger has been one of its publishers since 1924, and Ray H. Greene is a co-owner. After operating from various sites, the firm erected this building in 1941.
