Mount Johnson is a 7,680-foot summit in the eastern Olympic Mountains within Olympic National Park and the Daniel J. Evans Wilderness. The highest peak in The Needles and the fourth-highest in the Olympic chain, it rises in the Dungeness River basin on the drier, rain-shadowed side of the range, though the broader Olympics still receive heavy winter snow and avalanche-prone snowpack. Summer, especially July through September, usually brings the clearest weather. The mountain’s name came from a climb long thought to be the first ascent in 1940, but later evidence suggests the summit had already been reached around 1935. It remains a notable class 4 scramble in the Royal Basin area.
