Mount Deception is a 7,788-foot peak in Washington’s Olympic Mountains, the range’s second-highest mountain after Mount Olympus and the highest summit in the eastern Olympics. Rising above Royal Basin on the divide between the Dungeness and Dosewallips watersheds, it stands in a rugged landscape of ridges, towers, and small glaciers shaped by obducted oceanic crust and repeated Pleistocene glaciation. Though less wet than the western Olympics because of the rain shadow, it remains a serious mountaineering objective. First named Mount Holmes, it was renamed by U.S. Forest Service official G.A. Whitehead for the mountain’s confusing cloud cover and terrain, which made routes hard to identify.
