Sundial is a more than 7,200-foot summit in Olympic National Park, part of The Needles above Royal Basin. Its name comes from the way morning sunlight moves down its east face, allowing rough timekeeping from the basin below. Water from the peak drains into Royal Creek and then the Dungeness River. Adel and William Degenhardt made the first recorded climb in 1944, and routes range from class 3 scrambling on the East Face to class 5 climbing on the South Side Face. The mountain stands in the Olympics’ wet marine climate and is formed from sedimentary and oceanic crustal rocks later shaped by Pleistocene glaciation.
