When a river was too swift or shallow for navigation, shippers used canals with lift locks. The canals paralleled the river and used it as a water source. In a lift lock, an upstream-bound boat enters the lock, the gates close, water enters through a sluice gate and raises the boat, and when the water levels are equal the gates open and the boat continues on. Downstream traffic used the reverse sequence.
