More than 400 years ago, while the Spanish adventurer Cabrillo was exploring what is now Southern California, this lodgepole pine had just emerged from the soil. By the time Benjamin Davis Wilson discovered the valley in 1845, the tree had already grown beyond the average lodgepole height of 70 feet. After 410 years of surviving fires, floods, earthquakes, and human impacts, it stood as one of the largest lodgepole pines in the world, measuring 440 years in age, 110 feet in height, 74.9 inches in diameter at 4.5 feet above ground, 19.7 feet in circumference at the same height, and an estimated 9,300 board feet in volume.
