Rochester Covered Bridge carries Rochester Road over Calapooya Creek west of Sutherlin, and the crossing may date to as early as 1862, though the present bridge was built in 1933 by Floyd Frear. It is distinguished among Oregon’s covered bridges by a design described as unique among the state’s housed structures, especially its curved-top side windows, along with flat-arched portal openings and exposed false beams at the gable ends. In the late 1950s, local residents reportedly guarded it overnight after another nearby covered bridge was burned, and county commissioners then said it would be spared. Remodeled in 1969, it remains both a working crossing and a symbol of rural road building and community preservation.
