In response to President Lincoln's second call for 300 thousand troops, the 101st and 123 Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiments, recruited from Huron, Erie, Sandusky, Seneca, Wyandot, and Crawford Counties, were trained and mustered into the service of the United States on this site from August to October 1862. The 101st O.V.I. later served in major engagements at Perryville, Kentucky; Nolensville, Tennessee; Stones River, Tennessee; the Tullahoma Campaign, Tennessee; Liberty Gap, Tennessee; Chickamauga, Georgia; Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia; the Chattanoochee River, Georgia; Rocky Face Ridge, Georgia; the Atlanta Campaign, Georgia; Lovejoy Station, Georgia; Franklin, Tennessee; and Nashville, Tennessee. The 123rd O.V.I. later served in major engagements at 1st Winchester, Virginia; New Market, Virginia; Piedmont, Virginia; Lynchburg, Virginia; Skickers Ferry, Virginia; 2nd Winchester, Virginia; Berryville, Virginia; Opequon, Virginia; Fisher's Hill, Virginia; Cedar Creek, Virginia; the Siege of Petersbure, Virginia; Hatcher's Run, Virginia; High Bridge, Virginia; and Apponattox, Virginia. It honors those whose sacrifices preserved the Union.
