Mount Garfield rises in western Colorado east-northeast of Grand Junction, overlooking Palisade as the highest point of the Book Cliffs, one of the region’s most recognizable landforms. Named for President James Garfield a year after his death, it is distinguished by a stark profile created by Mesaverde Group rocks above Mancos Shale. Its commanding position above the Grand Valley, surrounding towns, and desert slopes has made it both a prominent regional landmark and a well-known destination reached by two classic hiking trails.
