Gaylor Peak is an 11,004-foot mountain on the Sierra Nevada crest in northern California, above Tioga Pass and Tioga Lake at the boundary of Yosemite National Park and Inyo National Forest. Rising steeply from Tioga Lake, it is a popular summer high-country hike reached by the Gaylor Lakes Trail, with a Class 2 ascent that requires only simple scrambling. A fault block mountain of metamorphic rock, it was once called Tioga Hill by early prospectors. Its present name honors Andrew Jack Gaylor, one of Yosemite’s first rangers, who died on patrol in 1921 after 14 years of National Park Service work.
