Roosevelt Military Academy was attended by 3,059 cadets from 1931-1973 and was named for the 26th President, Theodore Roosevelt, identified here as a recipient of the Noble Peace Prize and the Congressional Medal of Honor. Its cadets were called the Rough Riders in his honor, reflecting the qualities of courage, passion, conservative progressivism, valor, and patriotism associated with him. Special recognition is given to cadets who served the country and to the residents of Aledo and Mercer County for embracing the cadets during their stay. The USS Theodore Roosevelt, CVN71, a Nimitz Class nuclear super carrier known to crew members as "The Big Stick," uses the pilot radio call sign "Rough Rider." A Teddy Roosevelt Oak Tree donated to the academy by Mrs. Theodore Roosevelt from the family's Sagamore estate at Oyster Bay, New York, commemorated the President's 80th birthday and was planted and dedicated at the school's November 5, 1938 homecoming.
