The Fords, especially Edsel, lived in the public spotlight and considered security and privacy of the utmost importance. Entry to the estate passed through the guarded and gated opening in the monumental Gate Lodge building. The imposing structure contained the security office and an eight-car garage with an automobile turntable and wash station accessed through a walled courtyard. Above the arched opening and at each end of the Gate Lodge building were living quarters: an apartment and two generous cottages for staff. By the 1930s, chief of security Thomas Loughlin and his family occupied the South Cottage, while chauffeur Arthur Fauser and his family lived in North Cottage.
