The former Salt Evaporation Ponds have been divided into sections with different levels of saltiness so researchers can study water conditions, bird use, and prey abundance and learn how to create the most opportunities for the greatest number of waterbirds. The experiment uses the historic salt-making process of moving sea water through a series of evaporation ponds to slowly increase the saltiness of the water.
