California Nursery Historical Park preserves 20 acres shaped by a long history, from prehistoric geological change and Ice Age fossils to at least 5,000 years of Muwekma Ohlone habitation, followed by Spanish mission use, Mexican rancho operations, and Californio settlement. The land later passed through the hands of Jose de Jesus Vallejo and Jonas Clark before 463 acres were sold in 1884 to the newly incorporated California Nursery Company, which grew with the support of rail and water infrastructure into the largest nursery on the west coast. Under figures including John Rock, W.V. Eberly, and the Roeding family, the company supplied fruit and ornamental trees, used experimental orchards and grafting to improve quality, developed mass shipping methods, and contributed plants to major expositions in San Francisco. Its surviving adobe, packing shed, water towers, office, and President’s Cottage reflect successive eras of agricultural and corporate expansion. After retail growth, famous displays, and products such as the Peace Rose, the Niles nursery site closed in 1972, was later protected through local preservation efforts, designated a historical park in 1984, and opened to the public in 2022.
